Karnataka News
Jannik Sinner has made headlines by securing the year-end No. 1 ranking following a semi-final victory in Shanghai. However, his achievement is overshadowed by the World Anti-Doping Agency’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, seeking a suspension related to a doping case. Despite maintaining his innocence, Sinner faces scrutiny as the situation unfolds, leaving fans and fellow players watching closely.
Sinner secures the year-end No. 1 ranking with a semi-final win in Shanghai
Jannik Sinner clinched the year-end world number one ranking by defeating Czech 30th seed Tomas Machac 6-4, 7-5 in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday, making history as the first Italian to reach the tournament’s final.
Machac began the match strong, winning the first two games before Sinner scored. The top-seeded Italian eventually secured the hard-fought first set in 44 minutes, capitalizing on errors from Machac.
The two-time Grand Slam champion faced a tough challenge from Machac, especially in the second set. However, Sinner demonstrated his strength, clinching his 64th win of the year with only nine unforced errors.
Sinner’s next opponent will be either fourth-seeded Novak Djokovic, a record 24-time major champion or seventh-seeded Taylor Fritz from the U.S., who are set to compete in the second semi-final later on Saturday.
The Italian has had a standout season, capturing his first Grand Slam at the Australian Open and another at the U.S. Open. He is the first Italian to end the year as the world number one.
“It’s amazing. It’s something you dream of when you’re a kid when you’re young. Just to reach the number one spot now but to have the year-end … it’s also a different and special feeling,” Sinner said.
“But this happened during the tournament. So I’m not even thinking about that. I know tomorrow will be an important day … But it means so much to me, obviously.
“This is something I could not accomplish without the people and family and friends I have. Credit to my team.”
Machac, who secured a mixed doubles gold medal at the Paris Olympics, ended four-time Grand Slam champion Carlos Alcaraz’s 12-match winning streak on Thursday to reach the semi-finals.
“I think we all saw how much talent and firepower he (Machac) has,” Sinner said. “I had to be very, very careful in every service game. He’s returning very aggressively and very fast.
“I just tried to stay there every point, trying to see what’s going to happen … playing every point at the maximum intensity I could. I’m very happy about that. Happy to be back in a final again.”
WADA Appeals CAS for Sinner Suspension
The World Anti-Doping Agency announced on Saturday that it has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport regarding an independent tribunal’s August decision to exonerate world number one Jannik Sinner after he failed drug tests.
WADA stated that the tribunal’s conclusion of “no fault or negligence” regarding Sinner was inaccurate under the relevant rules, and it aims to impose “a period of ineligibility of between one and two years” on the Australian Open and U.S. Open champion.
The tribunal, organized by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, accepted Sinner’s explanation that the anabolic agent clostebol entered his system via massages and sports therapy from a member of his support team.
The ITIA stated on Saturday that: “The process was run according to World Anti-Doping Code guidelines; however, the ITIA acknowledges and respects WADA’s right to appeal the independent tribunal’s decision.”
According to the ITIA, Sinner stated that his physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi, used an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol on a small finger wound and then gave massages without gloves between March 5 and 13.
Italy’s Sinner has consistently claimed his innocence, stating that the clostebol level detected in his system was less than a billionth of a gram. However, some players criticized the ruling, arguing that Sinner’s explanation “made no sense.”
