Despite the prohibition, Kerala government-operated lottery tickets are being openly sold in certain areas of Karnataka
In Puttur, a quiet town in Coastal Karnataka, Kerala government-operated lottery tickets are openly sold to residents, despite a comprehensive ban on lottery sales. The Karnataka government imposed this ban in 2007 during H.D. Kumaraswamy’s tenure as Chief Minister.
The Hindu discovered a small paan shop in Manjalpadpu, Bolwar West, where these tickets were available for purchase. Priced at ₹40 each, the lottery offers a first prize of ₹75 lakh and a second prize of ₹10 lakh, with the draw scheduled for Tuesday, April 2.
When questioned about the source of the tickets, a shopkeeper stated that he acquired them from a Kerala-based agent who supplies retailers. Winners can claim their prizes directly, by mail, or through various banks. Prize claims of up to ₹1 lakh are approved by the District Lottery Officer, while claims ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹20 lakh are handled by the Deputy Director of Lotteries.
The shopkeeper also noted that the Kerala government processes claims regardless of whether the claimant resides in Karnataka or elsewhere in India.
Following a report to Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police, C.B. Ryshyanth, authorities detained one individual related to the case. “After this was brought to my notice, we filed a case and apprehended the person selling lottery tickets in Puttur. The police will take further action to prevent this practice in the town,” he stated.
