Google Photos Might Introduce AI Image Credits to Help Users Identify Deepfakes
Karnataka News
The latest version of the Google Photos app reportedly introduces new features to help identify AI-generated images. This update will allow users to determine if a photo was created or modified using artificial intelligence. Google Photos will include ID resource tags that provide insights into the AI origins of images and their digital source types.
This new functionality aims to combat the rise of deepfakes and enhance users’ transparency. However, how this information will be displayed within the app still needs to be determined, leaving users wondering how easily they can access these details.

AI Image Credits in Google Photos
Deepfakes have become a significant concern in recent years as a new form of digital manipulation. These manipulated images, videos, or audio files are created or enhanced using artificial intelligence to spread misinformation or deceive people. For example, actor Amitabh Bachchan recently filed a lawsuit against a company for using deepfake video ads that falsely showed him promoting their products.
According to a report from Android Authority, the latest version of the Google Photos app will feature a function that allows users to check if an image in their gallery was created using digital methods. This functionality was found in version 7.3 of the app; however, it is not yet active, so users with the latest version cannot access it now.
The publication discovered new XML code strings in the layout files that suggest upcoming features in the app. These are ID resources, unique identifiers for specific elements or resources within the app. One of these strings reportedly includes “ai_info,” indicating that information will be added to the images’ metadata. This label will identify whether an AI tool generated an image, promoting transparency.
Additionally, the “digital_source_type” tag is expected to indicate the name of the AI tool or model used to create or enhance the image. This could include names like Gemini, Midjourney, and others, giving users clarity about the technology behind the images they view.
It is still unclear how Google plans to present this information to users. One option is to embed it in the Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) data within the image, making it more secure and complicated to tamper with. However, this approach has a downside: users must navigate to the metadata page to access this information, making it less readily visible.
Another possibility is for the app to include an on-image badge that indicates when an image is AI-generated, similar to the approach taken by Meta on Instagram. This would give users immediate visual cues about the nature of the images they view.
Gemini AI Assistant to Add Support for WhatsApp and Spotify with New Features
The Gemini AI assistant on Android devices is reportedly gaining new features, including making calls through WhatsApp. Integrated into the operating system as an alternative to Google Assistant, Gemini can answer questions, generate text, and search the web. However, its usefulness could have been improved due to restricted integration with third-party apps.
To enhance its functionality, the tech giant has introduced extensions that allow the Gemini AI assistant to access specific apps. With these new capabilities, Gemini is set to support WhatsApp and Spotify, making it more versatile for everyday tasks.

Gemini Assistant Expands with New Extensions
An Android Authority report reveals new features were discovered in the beta version 15.40.31.29 of the Google app for Android, as shared by tipster AssembleDebug. Although these features have yet to be rolled out, beta testers cannot access them. When the extension is activated, a prompt card indicates that Google Assistant actions will be replaced by Gemini Extensions.
The Gemini app activity will facilitate actions like selecting a contact. Users must enable the Gemini app activity to use these extensions. The app will also learn which app users prefer for calling or texting specific contacts. By default, it will automatically select that app. Users can change their preferences or disable any extension through the activity menu.
The tipster successfully activated the new Gemini extension for WhatsApp, which allows users to send text messages to specific contacts using voice commands, similar to Google Assistant. When activated, the Gemini assistant interface displays an app card that users can click to enter the WhatsApp app and view the message. This extension also enables users to edit messages before sending them and to make voice calls through the app.
Regarding Spotify, the extension is available for both free and Premium subscribers. Users can ask Gemini to play a song on Spotify, and it will automatically select and start playing it. After the command is executed, a Spotify card appears, allowing users to tap on it to access the chosen song within the app.
